Tournament play

  • Tournaments differ from league play, also called Academy game days. Link:  about tournament play
  • Competition format:  Each team has a 3-game guaranteed schedule (two games Saturday, one Sunday morning), with a chance to advance to a championship game Sunday afternoon.
  • Official tournament web site:  http://www.nth-tophat.com/Default.aspx?tabid=316338. The official tournament web site is the first source for any late breaking schedule changes. The tournament web site’s software provider also offers a mobile app for iOS (Apple) and Android devices. Link:  GOT Soccer mobile app
  • Weather updates:  Check the official tournament web site or the NTH field status hot-line: 770-220-4089 or the NTH RainedOut web site. We’ll update our own Junior Academy Girls Twitter account and hot-line when possible, but our Junior Academy channels could lag the official tournament weather communication channels if changes are posted while we’re driving or coaching.

Challenges

Tournament experiences are affected by the number and quality of teams in our divisions. The U8 Junior Academy age group doesn’t tend to attract a lot of teams (U7 even less so), and we try to avoid “us vs. us” games in tournaments. (We will end up with two intra-Academy games among our 15 total round robin games.) So this creates some challenges:

  • Team placements:  We have one U8 team (2010 birth year) in a lower level U9 Academy division (7v7 format using goalkeepers). We have two teams in the U8 Academy division (4v4 format, no goalkeepers). We have two teams in the U8 recreational division (4v4 format, no goalkeepers). The tournament doesn’t have a separate U7 division, so our U7 girls (2011 birth years) will play in the U8 recreational division.
  • Coaches:  Our teams will play 15 total games over the weekend, possibly more if any teams advance to the championship round. Hailey and Ward will coach most games, but schedule conflicts mean we will need to draft a guest coach or two to cover some games.
  • Bad weather:  In case of bad weather, tournament games could be delayed, shortened, converted into penalty kick shootouts or canceled altogether. The tournament host organization makes these decisions. Refund policy:  see tournament rules document, rule #12.

Weather updates

  • Check the official tournament web site or the NTH field status hot-line: 770-220-4089 or the NTH RainedOut web site. We’ll update our own Junior Academy Girls Twitter account and hot-line when possible, but our Junior Academy channels could lag the official tournament weather communication channels if changes are posted while we’re driving or coaching.

Entry fees

  • Tournament entry fees are not included in the Junior Academy fees you pay to NTH. Entry fees for the tournament are $63 per player. Link:  tournament fee details
  • We will bundle the tournament entry fees with our other Junior Academy expenses for the fall and spring season. Those fees totaled $12 per player. The main expenses were laminating player passes and parent game day rosters, web hosting fees, telephone hot-line fees, and the cookie cake for our Fall Finale Festival. Link:  Junior Academy expense details
  • Other link:  about fees (general info)
  • You can pay on-line securely via PayPal. (You don’t need your own PayPal account; you can use any major credit or debit card.)
    1. When you click the Pay Now button below, you’ll be taken to a PayPal login screen.
    2. If you want to pay by credit card or debit card instead, click the “Pay with Debit or Credit Card” button below the PayPal login window; this will allow you to do a guest checkout through PayPal without creating an account.
  • If you choose to pay cash, please deliver in person to Ward in an envelope with your daughter’s name on it, and get confirmation that the cash has been received.

Pay tournament fees plus Junior Academy expenses ($75):

Select this option if your daughter is playing in the tournament (everyone except Clark, Clark, Flammia, Slaton, Trebon, Yang).

Pay Junior Academy expenses only ($12):

Select this option if your daughter isn’t playing in the tournament (Clark, Clark, Flammia, Slaton, Trebon, Yang).

Tournament paperwork

  • Tournament release of liability form:  The tournament requires parents to sign a release form. We’ll collect signatures for team release forms before / after practice the week of May 7th. May 13 update: Everyone has signed — thank you!
  • Medical consent forms:  We’re required to present individual player medical consent forms for 2017-2018 (along with team release of liability forms) during tournament check-in on Friday, May 18th. If you have not yet submitted a medical consent form, please deliver to Ward after a practice by May 15th. If you have access to a scanner, you can scan the form and send via e-mail.

Team assignments

  • Tournament rules require rosters to stay fixed, so we can’t borrow a player from another NTH team in case of illness, injury, traffic delay, etc.
  • We can’t move players between teams to work around schedule conflicts. If your daughter has a conflict with a scheduled game, she will still be eligible to play in her team’s other games.
  • There are a bunch of factors that go into team assignments. If you have any questions about the rosters, please feel free to ask Ward in person after a practice the week of May 14th. (E-mail isn’t the best format for this conversation.)

Team rosters:

Warm-up captains:  Girls whose names are listed in bold print are warm-up captains. The captains are responsible for gathering their teammates and starting pre-game warm-up. This is more important than usual, since coaches may be finishing a game on a different field when warm-up is due to start. C1=game 1 captain, C2=game 2 captain, C3=game 3 captain. Link:  warm-up ideas

Schedules

  • Each team will play 3-4 games during the weekend:  two games on Saturday, one or two on Sunday (including a Sunday AM game).
  • The first three games are guaranteed regardless of results. Teams can qualify for a Sunday afternoon championship match based on the results of the first three games.
  • Tournaments follow a different set of schedule standards than our regular Junior Academy game days. This tournament typically includes 250+ teams in multiple age groups spread across multiple venues, so we’re just a few small pieces of a large jigsaw puzzle. We don’t have control over schedules or venues.

Player and parent notes

  • Venue(s):  Most of our games are scheduled at United Quest Park on fields 6, 7 or 8. Field 6 is in front of the clubhouse, while fields 7 and 8 are behind the clubhouse. One game is scheduled at Noonday 9A, where we had recent 7v7 games. Noonday 9A is best accessed through the back Noonday entrance (548 Shallowford Road, Kennesaw, 30144).
  • Arrival time:  Girls should report to the game field 30 minutes before kickoff for warm-up. Parking will likely be a challenge, so you may need to drop your daughter off near her field so she can start warm-up while you find a parking spot.
  • Weather updates:  Click here for the official tournament weather update channels. We’ll update our own Junior Academy Girls Twitter account and phone hot-line when possible, but our Junior Academy channels could lag the official tournament weather communication channels if changes are posted while we’re driving or coaching.
  • NTH uniforms (2016-2017): yellow / yellow / yellow combo

    home uniforms

NTH uniforms (2016-2017): blue / blue / blue combo

    away uniforms

Uniforms:  Home (H) and away (a) designations are posted in the schedule section. The general rule of thumb:  if we’re the home team, girls should wear their gold uniforms. If we’re the away team, girls should wear their navy blue uniforms. Girls should always bring both sets of uniforms in case of unexpected color conflict. Link:  what to pack in backpacks on game days

  • Tips for parents:  We ask that you be your daughter’s biggest fans, and all the other girls’ 2nd biggest fans. Please help us keep the environment positive and fun for the players. Link:  game day guidelines for parents
  • Footwear:  Girls should wear their normal soccer shoes and also bring sneakers or slides. After games, the girls should remove their socks, shin-guards and soccer shoes, and switch to more comfortable footwear. This will help their feet rest and also allow time for footwear items to dry out.
  • No jewelry:  Tournament rules state “No jewelry of any kind may be worn.” The referee has final say on this. Our recommendation is to leave jewelry at home.
  • water bottlesProper hydration:  It’s likely to be HOT this weekend! Please make sure your daughter is staying properly hydrated. This includes drinking plenty of “good” fluids before, during and after games. Please also make sure she brings a large insulated water jug (minimum half-gallon) to each game. Link:  hydration guidelines
  • Nutrition:  Good nutrition can have a huge impact on your daughter’s performance over the weekend. Link:  Nesquick simple Game Day Eating guide
    • Before games:  The girls should eat a high-carb, low-fat breakfast a couple of hours before their first games. A small amount of milk is fine with cereal, but the girls should skip milk as a pre-game beverage.
    • Between games:  The girls should eat a snack (one or two items such as low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) soon after their first games. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
    • After each day’s 2nd game:  The girls should eat some type of carbohydrate snack as soon as possible after their second games. This is one time when sweets are actually a solid choice. Chocolate milk has become popular as a recovery drink. They can eat a big meal after they get home. Milk is fine during this post-game period.
