Game Day: Saturday, April 15, 2017

Saturday afternoon game time has changed!

We got word Tuesday afternoon that our Saturday afternoon game at Tophat has changed from a 3:00 PM start to a 4:30 PM start. (The field had been accidentally double-booked.)

Game day notes

  • Away games:  We have our first away games of the spring. Check the location links in the table below for maps and driving directions.
  • Game format:  We’ll play two 7v7 games against outside opponents, and one 7v7 game against our Tophat sister group. Games will include goalkeepers.
    •  7v7 games:  We’ll be on a bigger field, slightly larger than the full Metro North TOPS field. Some girls may run themselves into exhaustion as they learn to adjust to the bigger space, so we’ll have more substitutes than usual.
    • About goalkeepers (goalies):  We’ll rotate everyone through the goalkeeper position this spring (link:  goalkeeper training). We want our goalkeepers to be soccer players, not statues. Goalies can use their hands in the penalty area. But we’ll ask them to step out of their penalty area when their team is on attack, and be willing to use their feet when they are outside their area, just like the other soccer players. (We don’t want a goalie standing back in her goal as if she’s in a cage.)
  • Weekly quiz:  We post a quiz each week below the team assignments. Scroll past the roster table for quiz details.

Team assignments and schedules

  • “DH” girls:  We are stretched numbers-wise because of the 7v7 games, so we have scheduled several girls to play twice. (We call this double-header or “DH” play.) The double-header girls have an indicator next to their names:  a (1) for their first game, and a (2) for their second game. Some DH girls have games at two different parks, with a uniform switch from yellow to blue in between.
    • If your daughter is scheduled for two games but isn’t available to play twice, please e-mail Ward right away.
  • Warm-up captains:  Girls whose names are in italic print with a (C) indicator are warm-up captains. They are responsible for gathering their teammates and helping the coach start pre-game warm-up. Link:  warm-up ideas

  2. a. Good approach (step to the ball), b. Good kick with the inside of the foot, c. Good follow-through.
