Game day notes

  • Weekly quiz:  We post a quiz each week below the team assignments. Scroll past the roster table for quiz details.

Team assignments and schedules

  • “DH” girls:  We’ve scheduled some girls to play twice. (We call this double-header or “DH” play.) The DH girls have a (1) or (2) indicator next to their names to indicate game 1 or game 2 of the double-header.
  • Warm-up captains:  Girls whose names are in italic print with a (C) indicator are warm-up captains. They are responsible for gathering their teammates and helping the coach start pre-game warm-up. Link:  warm-up ideas

Weekly quiz:  keeping the ball

Girls can win a treat after our Wednesday or Thursday practice if they can identify which decisions help us keep the ball. For each topic below, decide which decision is good (ruler) or bad (drooler).

Vision:

  1. Look up after you take your first touch, and then look up again right before you pass or shoot.
  2. Look up before you take your first touch, and again after each touch.

Dribbling speed:

  1. Dribble at full speed all the time so you can outrun opponents.
  2. Change speeds when dribbling, going slower in traffic to keep control, and faster in open space.
  3. Dribble at medium speed all the time so you can keep control.

Dribbling direction:

  1. Dribble straight to goal and try to go through any opponent who is in your way.
  2. Dribble straight to goal if that’s where you see open space, but change direction or do a dribbling fake if an opponent is blocking your path.

Winning a loose ball (a 50/50 ball):

  1. Get your body between the ball and the nearest opponent.
  2. Kick the ball into space, and then try to win it later.

Moving an opponent:

  1. Toss a tasty candy treat a few steps away from the opponent.
  2. Change direction and hope the opponent moves from her position to chase the ball.
  3. Grab the opponent’s arm and pull her out of the way.

Bonus — keeping the ball when you are near your own goal:

There are several choices. Two of them are good choices, one is just OK, and one is a bad choice. You decide!.

  1. Pass the ball to your center back or goalie. She should have time and space to take the ball into open space.
  2. Dribble toward your own goal at one speed.
  3. Dribble away from your own goal at one speed.
  4. Dribble away from your own goal. Keep your body between the ball and the nearest opponent to protect the ball. And change speed to lose the opponent.
