Game Day: Saturday, November 10, 2018

Field status update (Friday @ 6:30 PM):  Noonday Park fields have been closed Saturday due to waterlogged conditions. Girls who were scheduled for the 9:00 AM game at Noonday have been shifted to the 1:00 PM time slot at Metro North Park. We’ll play simultaneous 1:00 PM games on both halves of the TOPS field so that everyone gets plenty of playing time. We may even finish with some 7v7 play.

If your daughter was scheduled for the 9 AM game, but can only make the 11:30 AM game, she’s welcome to switch. If your daughter was scheduled for the 9 AM game, but can’t play in either of the later time slots, please notify her coach.

Game day notes

  • Two venues:  We have games at two different parks. Check the top row of the roster table below for game locations.
  • Chilly weather:  The current forecast calls for temperatures in the 40s Saturday with some wind. Most girls will want to wear more than just their standard uniform. Link:  cold weather attire
  • Uniforms:  Players should wear their yellow uniforms.
  • Weekly quiz:  We post a quiz each week below the team assignments. Scroll past the roster table for quiz details.
  • Warm-up captains:  Girls whose names are in bold print with a (C) indicator are warm-up captains. They are responsible for gathering their teammates and helping the coach start pre-game warm-up. Link:  warm-up ideas

Weekly quiz – 1v1 defending

Girls can win a treat if they can demonstrate proper 1v1 defending technique, and also answer these questions about 1v1 defending.

  1. When an opponent has the ball, should you run away from her toward your own goal? Or should you stand and wait for her to come toward you? Or should you shut down the space between you and her?
  2. When is the best time to shut down space between you and an opponent who has the ball? After she gets a head start, or as soon as possible so she can’t get a head start?
  3. What’s the best way to shut down space? Run in like a crazed banshee? Stand and watch like a used potato? Run in “fast to slow”, and “high to low” so you can change direction if needed to stay between the opponent and our goal?
  4. When should you try to win the ball? Right now? Never? Or stay goal-side and be patient, and wait until the opponent makes a mistake and loses control of the ball?
