2019 NTH Adidas Cup

NTH Fall 2018 uniforms: blueNTH Fall 2018 uniforms: yellowTournament uniforms:  We’ve been asked to wear navy blue for home games, yellow for away games. (Exception: Our 2012s will wear yellow.) Home (H) and away (a) designations are posted in the schedule section. Girls should bring both uniforms to every game just in case of a color conflict.

We will wrap up our 2018-2019 soccer year by playing in the NTH Adidas Select and Rec Cup tournaments over the weekend of May 18-19, 2019.

Tournament play:

  • Tournaments differ from league play, also called Academy game days. Link:  about tournament play
  • Competition format:  Each team has a 3-game guaranteed schedule (two games Saturday, one Sunday morning), with a chance to advance to a championship game Sunday afternoon.
  • Official tournament web sites:  There are actually two different overlapping tournaments. The official tournament web sites are the first source for any late breaking schedule changes. The tournament web sites’ software provider also offers a mobile app for iOS (Apple) and Android devices. Link:  SINC Sports mobile app
  • Weather updates:  Check the appropriate official tournament web sites or the NTH RainedOut web site or the NTH field status hot-line: 770-220-4089. We’ll update our own Junior Academy Girls Twitter account and phone hot-line when possible, but our Junior Academy channels could lag the official tournament weather communication channels if changes are posted while we’re driving or coaching.

Challenges:

Tournament experiences are affected by the number and quality of teams in our divisions. The U8 Junior Academy age group doesn’t tend to attract a lot of teams (U7 even less so), and we try to avoid “us vs. us” games in tournaments. So this creates some challenges:

  • Team placements:  We have one U8 team (2011 birth year) in a lower level U9 Academy division (7v7 format using goalkeepers). We have two teams in the U8 Academy division (5v5 format using goalkeepers). The tournament doesn’t have a separate U7 division, so our U7 girls (2012 birth years) will play in the U8 recreational division (also 5v5 format using goalkeepers).
  • Coaches:  We’ll play anywhere from 12-16 total games over the weekend. Barring any schedule changes, Sydney and Ward will coach all round-robin games. Depending on prior results, there’s a chance we’ll have to draft a guest coach for one Sunday game.
  • Bad weather:  In case of bad weather, tournament games could be delayed, shortened, converted into penalty kick shootouts or canceled altogether. The tournament host organization makes these decisions. Refund policy (from tournament rules):  If the tournament is canceled in its entirety due to inclement weather or other “Acts of God” then refunds will be determined at that time.  Refunds will not be issued for any other reason.
  • Parking:  Most of our games are at Quest Park on fields 7 or 8. The 1st lot at Noonday Park is an alternate parking spot for Quest 7 and 8. Some games are next door at Noonday. Use the front Noonday entrance for field 4, and the back Noonday entrance for field 9.

Weather updates:

  • Check the official tournament web sites or the NTH RainedOut web site or the NTH field status hot-line: 770-220-4089. We’ll update our own Junior Academy Girls Twitter account and hot-line when possible, but our Junior Academy channels could lag the official tournament weather communication channels if changes are posted while we’re driving or coaching.

Entry fees:

  • Tournament entry fees are not included in the Junior Academy fees you pay to NTH. Entry fees for the tournament are a touch over $60 per player. Link:  tournament fee details
  • We will bundle the tournament entry fees with our other Junior Academy expenses for the fall and spring season. Those fees totaled just under $19 per player. The main expenses were laminating player passes and parent game day rosters, web hosting fees, telephone hot-line fees, game balls and goalkeeper gloves, and cookie cake for our Fall Finale Festival. Link:  Junior Academy expense details
  • Other link:  about fees (general info)
  • You can pay on-line securely via PayPal. (You don’t need your own PayPal account; you can use any major credit or debit card.)
    1. When you click the Pay Now button below, you’ll be taken to a PayPal login screen.
    2. If you want to pay by credit card or debit card instead, click the “Pay with Debit or Credit Card” button below the PayPal login window; this will allow you to do a guest checkout through PayPal without creating an account.
  • If you choose to pay cash, please deliver in person to Ward in an envelope with your daughter’s name on it, and get confirmation that the cash has been received.

Tournament paperwork (updated May 16 AM):

Parents need to complete two paperwork-type tasks prior to the start of the tournament:

  • Tournament release of liability form:  The tournament requires parents to sign a release of liability form. We’ll collect signatures for team release forms before / after practice the week of May 6th. The tournament registration system will send an e-mail to families on May 11 or 12 with a link to electronically sign the tournament release form.
    • Release forms needed for: Everyone’s release forms are now complete.
  • Medical consent forms:  We’re required to have individual player 2018-2019 medical consent forms on hand during the tournament. We collected many of these back in August, 2018. If you have not yet submitted a medical consent form, please complete one and deliver to Ward by Tuesday, May 14.
    • Forms needed:  Everyone has submitted the medical release form — thank you!
  • Submitting the medical consent form is a separate task from completing the tournament release of liability. The medical consent goes into our Junior Academy Girls records book. The tournament release is an electronic transaction between you and the tournament check-in system.

Team assignments:

  • Tournament rules require rosters to stay fixed, so we can’t borrow a player from another NTH team in case of illness, injury, traffic delay, etc.
  • We can’t move players between teams to work around schedule conflicts. If your daughter has a conflict with a scheduled game, she will still be eligible to play in her team’s other games.
  • There are a bunch of factors that go into team assignments. If you have any questions about the rosters, please feel free to ask Ward in person after a practice the week of May 13th. (E-mail isn’t the best format for this conversation.)

Warm-up captains:

Girls whose names are listed in bold print are warm-up captains. The captains are responsible for gathering their teammates and starting pre-game warm-up. This is more important than usual, since coaches may be finishing a game on a different field when warm-up is due to start. C1=game 1 captain, C2=game 2 captain, C3=game 3 captain. Link:  warm-up ideas

Schedules:

  • Each team will play 3-4 games during the weekend:  two games on Saturday, one or two on Sunday (usually including a Sunday AM game).
  • The first three games are guaranteed regardless of results. Teams can qualify for a Sunday afternoon championship match based on the results of their first three games.
  • Tournaments follow a different set of schedule standards than our regular Junior Academy game days. This tournament includes 350+ teams in multiple age groups spread across multiple venues, so we’re just a few small pieces of a large jigsaw puzzle. We don’t have control over schedules or venues.

Tips for parents:

We ask that you be your daughter’s biggest fans, and all the other girls’ 2nd biggest fans. Please help us keep the environment positive and fun for the players. Link:  game day guidelines for parents

Footwear:

Girls should wear their normal soccer shoes and also bring sneakers or slides. After games, the girls should remove their socks, shin-guards and soccer shoes, and switch to more comfortable footwear. This will help their feet rest and also allow time for footwear items to dry out.

No jewelry:

Tournament rules state “No jewelry of any kind may be worn.” Our recommendation is to leave jewelry at home.

water bottlesProper hydration:

It’s likely to be HOT this weekend! (The forecast as of Wednesday calls for high temperatures in the upper 80s.) Please make sure your daughter is staying properly hydrated. This includes drinking plenty of healthy fluids before, during and after games. Please also make sure she brings a large insulated water jug (minimum half-gallon) to each game. Link:  hydration guidelines

Nutrition:

Good nutrition can have a huge impact on your daughter’s performance over the weekend. Link:  Nesquick simple Game Day Eating guide

  • Before games:  The girls should eat a high-carb, low-fat breakfast a couple of hours before their first games. A small amount of milk is fine with cereal, but the girls should skip milk as a pre-game beverage.
  • Between games:  The girls should eat a snack (one or two items such as low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) soon after their first games. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
  • After each day’s 2nd game:  The girls should eat some type of carbohydrate snack as soon as possible after their second games. This is one time when sweets are actually a solid choice. Chocolate milk has become popular as a recovery drink. They can eat a big meal after they get home. Milk is fine during this post-game period.
