Game Day: Saturday, April 17, 2021

We have a rare Saturday / Sunday split game day. Six of our girls are scheduled to play Saturday (game day info below). The other 24 girls are set to play Sunday (link:  Sunday, April 18 game day info). If you don’t see your daughter listed below, check the Sunday, April 18 game day page.

Game day notes:

  • Game location:  Saturday’s game is away at Jonquil Park in Smyrna. Our driving directions were created back in the early 2000s, and may not be fully accurate after all of the road work related to the Braves stadium. We recommend you look up driving directions from your own house to confirm current data.
  • Uniforms:  Players should wear their yellow uniforms. (We’re the away team, which normally means we would wear blue. But the Smyrna girls only have blue uniforms, so we’ll wear yellow.
    • All players have received pink practice vests. They should bring them to every practice and game day.
  • Weekly game situation tutorial:  Our weekly quizzes didn’t get any traction, so we’re trying a new idea:  a weekly game situation tutorial. This week’s tutorial covers goalkeeper possession and explains when the ball is considered live.
  • Warm-up captains:  Girls whose names are in bold print with a (C) indicator are warm-up captains. They are responsible for gathering their teammates and helping the coach start pre-game warm-up. Link:  warm-up ideas

Weekly game situation tutorial – goalkeeper possession:

Situation #1:  The opponent takes a shot, and our goalie makes a save:

The other team is expected to retreat behind the build-out line (which we call the “get back line”.) The ball never went out of bounds, so it is considered live as soon as our goalkeeper either places the ball on the ground, or rolls, kicks or throws the ball toward a teammate.

Advice:  The goalie should not set the ball down until she has already made a plan about what she’s going to do next. Otherwise she’s taking a big risk, because the opponent can rush in and try to steal the ball before the goalie kicks it.

Situation #2:  The opponent takes a shot, but misses, and the ball rolls over the end line without our goal having touched it:

The other team is expected to retreat behind the build-out (“get back”) line. The ball went out of bounds, so it is considered to be a dead ball. The goalie is expected to set the ball down in the goal area before re-starting with a dead ball kick.

What’s the difference?

If the ball never went out of bounds, it’s live as soon as the goalie sets the ball down. If the ball went out of bounds, it’s not live until the goalie kicks it back into play.
