Weekly game situation tutorial – “danger ball” situations:
We encourage players to do their best to keep possession. Sometimes this means they should pass or dribble toward their own goal to create open space further up the field. But this can involve some risk.
If a player dribbles toward her own goal, we consider this to be a potential “danger ball” situation. A defender will likely be tracking her, hoping to win the ball and get an easy goal-scoring opportunity. A player in this situation needs to have a plan, and be ready to turn back upfield as soon as she gets the defender out of position.
Check back Tuesday night for examples, and what separates smart play from risky danger-ball play.
